Jimi Rea

I have been a working photographer and artist for over twenty years, working for the national press such as the Scotsman and the Times and various magazine titles. specialising in portrait and documentary photography. I recently spent ten months in Shetland documenting the environment, the people and the wildlife there using a combination of photography and oil painting, this is the first time I’ve used both in one project. While in Shetland I became increasingly aware of the terrible pollution caused by Plastic in our oceans, Hundreds and hundreds of  miles of beautiful remote coastline littered with discarded plastic, In some places you’d be luck to find a few square inches that didn’t have plastic. In Shetland there seems to be a problem with discarded fishing nets in particular. Endless amounts of rope, buoys and other industrial fishing rubbish, we only see what is washed ashore, “Ghost nets” cause unseen damage to the environment and wildlife. I’ve always tried to be aware of my own impact on the environment, from the food I eat and how its produced, where it comes from etc to the things I buy and how I travel. When I found out about OCEAN REVIVAL 2020 and the monumental task they were prepared to undertake in order to raise awareness of plastic is our oceans, I had to get in touch. I’m so happy to help in any way I can. I do believe the tide can be turned against our reliance on plastic and this awareness raising project is key to the re-education needed.
